PETERHEAD

Historic Overview
With 19,000 inhabitants, Peterhead is the largest town in Aberdeenshire and the most easterly town in Scotland. It was founded by the Earls Marischals of Inverugie and developed around the harbour at Keith Insch in 1587. By 1680 Peterhead had become one of the largest fishing ports on the north coast its economy growing through the development of sealing, whaling and fishing, particularly for herring. Today Peterhead is Europe's premier white-fish port.

Over the years Peterhead grew up the hill from the harbour and the fisher folk moved to the Roanheads area to the north of the harbour. Another two harbours were added to the original Port Henry Harbour as the town grew. During the 19th century the town gained a reputation as a Spa, centred around Broad Street and this led to the development of some fine Victorian mansions in the immediate hinterland. The town swallowed up these mansions, as it grew westward.

The advent of the oil industry in the North Sea in the 1970s led to considerable areas of the town set aside for industrial use, and an associated increase in the rate of new housing development.
