INVERURIE
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
In 1998,
the Aberdeenshire Towns Partnership (ATP) led the
formulation of a strategy for Inverurie, which would
help to shape its future as the employment and service
capital of Garioch and improve the delivery of public
services. The initial three year phase was followed by a
second phase ending in 2004.
In the
early days Planning Consultants, Gillespies, drew up a
strategy following extensive public consultation. This
resulted in a 16 point action plan with all but a few
being completed due to being unfeasible.
Inverurie
is an expanding town but constrained by the bypass, the
railway line and the river. This requires much of the
strategic focus to be on physical planning especially in
the town centre (catalysed by the relocation of the
Tesco store), edge of town housing, and industrial land
provision.
It was
recognised that a town strategy must consider more than
just the physical aspects and in 1999/2000 the
Partnership developed an Economic Action Plan and a
Community Strategy. This work led to a strengthened
relationship with the wider community as well as Gordon
Enterprise Trust and a reinvigorated Business
Association.
The
resulting objectives were:
-
Enhance competitiveness, image and identity
-
Support business growth
-
Encourage learning and enterprise
-
Develop a framework for town expansion
-
Improve housing provision, especially for first time
buyers
-
Enhance environmental quality
-
Improve social provision for everyone in community
-
Involve the community in formation and delivery of
strategy
Special
emphasis was placed on seeking to ensure that the
respective Economic and Community action plans are
complementary to each other and the physical development
of the town.
Key targets
for Inverurie were:
- A
masterplan for development (with focus around the
Town Hall area)
- A
vibrant Business Association (which recognises its
role in supporting the wider community)
- A Town
Partnership which is open, inclusive, dynamic and
efficient
- A
series of successful bids for external funding (e.g.
Lottery)
-
Increased choice and quality of housing and business
premises
- An
agreed long term Traffic Action Plan
