BANFF AND MACDUFF
|
Banff is recognised as one of
Scotland’s best preserved Royal Burghs and,
together with a substantial part of its
landscape setting, is designated as an
‘outstanding conservation area’ with excellent
architectural features throughout the town.
For many years Banff was the
administrative centre for the region and
consequently the local authority was a
significant employer. With the re-organisation
of local government some services were
reconstructed, but they still remains a major
employer within the town. In the private sector
Banff has an increasing reliance on the tourism
industry with major attractions such as Duff
House and investment in a new Marina. |

Macduff was established as a
fishing settlement in the late eighteenth
century around a new harbour, financed by the
Earl of Fife. Over the next two centuries a
series of improvements to the harbour ensured
that Macduff was kept at the forefront of the
fishing industry in the North East. In support
of that industry, services such as shipbuilding
and engineering were established around the
harbour. Macduff is home to nationally
recognised companies in the shipbuilding and
soft drinks.
Within the community there is
a legacy of cultural and economic achievement,
added to the undoubted attraction of the built
and natural environment, giving considerable
potential for the development and promotion of
the area. Past wealth and economic activity in
the area has produced an able and adaptable
workforce.
